Dordle vs Dualword

Three dailies hide two five-letter words. Dordle gives each word its own board. Xordle never lets the words share a letter. Dualword scores one guess on a split tile.

The short answer

If you want two boards side by side, that is Dordle. If you want one board where every color belongs to exactly one of two words that never overlap, that is Xordle. If you want one board where each tile shows the result for both words at the same time, that is Dualword.

All three take one typed five-letter word per turn and score it against two hidden answers. The difference is how the results are shown and how much reading each turn asks of you.

How Dordle works

Dordle puts two boards next to each other. One typed word lands on both. Each board colors the letters against its own answer, so the same letter can be green on the left and gray on the right. You get seven rows. A solved board stays as it is while you finish the other one.

The original is by zaratustra on itch.io. There are many copies online under names like double Wordle. Most keep the two-board layout and the seven rows.

How Xordle works

Xordle, by Kelly Dornhaus, uses one board for two answers. The rule that makes it work: the two words share no letters. A green or yellow clue tells you a letter belongs to one of the two words, but not which. Part of the puzzle is sorting the clues into the right word.

You get eight tries, and the first row is a clue that is already filled in for everyone. Once you place a letter in one word, you know it is absent from the other.

How Dualword works

Dualword also uses one board, but every tile is cut in half. The top half is word one. The bottom half is word two. Navy is the right letter in the right spot. Gold is in that word, elsewhere. Gray is not in that word. You read two results off one tile.

The two answers can share letters. A letter can be navy on top and gray on the bottom. That is the normal case, not an edge case. You get eight tries. When one word lands, it docks above the board so the remaining rows go to the other word.

Which one to pick

Dordle asks you to scan two boards and keep two keyboards in your head. Xordle asks you to deduce which word a clue belongs to. Dualword tells you which word each half belongs to, and asks you to read two stories from one row.

If the deduction in Xordle is the part you like, play Xordle. If you want the information on the tile itself, Dualword is the quieter read.

What we checked

Dordle and Xordle rules come from the public games on October 24, 2026: the itch.io Dordle game and the rules text on xordle.org. We read the rules. We did not run a solve-rate test on the other games. Dualword rules are from the game we ship.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dualword a Dordle clone?

No. Dordle shows two boards and one guess lands on both. Dualword shows one board with split tiles, so both results for a letter live on the same tile. Dordle gives you seven rows. Dualword gives you eight.

Is Dualword the same as Xordle?

No. In Xordle the two words never share a letter, and a color does not say which word it belongs to. In Dualword the words can share letters, and the top and bottom half of the tile tell you which word each result is for.

Which of the three is hardest?

We have not measured solve rates across the three. Each asks for a different kind of reading: two boards, clue sorting, or two halves per tile. Pick by the kind of reading you enjoy.

Does Dualword have an unlimited mode?

No. One pair a day. It flips at midnight in America/New York. Puzzle #1 was August 22, 2026.
